Asphalt shingles have been America’s go-to roofing material throughout the decades! Although there have been more types of roofing materials that have come into the market over the years, asphalt shingles have an impressive 80% market share value! They have remained the most basic and affordable option for those who are on a budget and prefer simplicity in a clean look
Asphalt shingles have also been known to be called composition shingles or 3-tab shingles. They were first used in America in 1901 and after some years of market experimentation with patterns, shapes and textures evolved into the standard 3-tab version we know and use today. There are 3 tab flaps with quarter inch grooves between them in each of the shingle’s panel, these shingles run flat and thin in contrast to the premium standards of architectural roof shingles which are layered and textured in look. Regular asphalt shingles are therefore cheaper in price because less material is used. Although they do protect against basic elements of weather, they are perceptible to blow offs which may require asphalt shingle repairs or replacements. However, they are warrantied for 20-30 years and have an average life of 15-20 years.
Types of Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt shingles come in two types of base materials, either fiberglass or organic and are then surfaced or coated with granules. Both bases are made similarly with asphalt or modified asphalt that is applied to one or both sides. The underside of the shingle is treated from mica, sand or talc to prevent shingles from sticking together. The surface has either ceramic granules, quartz, vitrified brick, slate, schist or stone added to the top. The surface, in turn, is able to block UV light and has basic physical protective qualities from water and impact. Self-sealing strips are usually added to the underside of the shingles to prevent blow-offs. Over the years, since blow offs is common with asphalt shingles, new classes have been made dependent on their reactions to winds going at differing speeds or mph.
Organic shingles: these are made up of organic materials such as cellulose, waste paper or wood fiber amount others that act as a base mat. It is then saturated with asphalt to waterproof it. Adhesive asphalt is then added to the top and covered with solid granules, this type of shingle has usually 40% more asphalt per square foot than fiberglass and are also less brittle than fiberglass in cold weather. However, their organic core makes them more susceptible to fire which gives them a class B fire rating.
Fiberglass shingles: these shingles were originally made in order to replace the asbestos in organic mat shingles. Fiberglass shingles incorporate a glass fiber mat base that is made from wet and randomly laid glass fiber that’s bonded with urea–formaldehyde resin. It’s coated with asphalt that contains mineral fillers in order to give them waterproofing capabilities. They hold a class A fire rating.
Asphalt shingles come in a limited variety of colors and styles, although their range is more limited than other roofing alternatives if you require a simple streamlined look you’ll be content with what asphalt shingles have to offer. Perhaps the most used and known colors are gray and red. As far as shape, cutouts can run along the bottom edges or they can come in their original rectangular form. However, if you are desiring any changes of shapes or cutouts then these options are available to you with other roofing alternatives.
